Imagine that your child has just been diagnosed with a
chronic condition. You have had sleepless nights as you navigate the complex
health system. There have been countless doctors, nurses, technicians using
language that is foreign to you. Your child now faces treatments, medications, testing,
and side effects for a lifetime.
Now imagine your child is school aged. What happens if they
get sick at school? Will the teachers or administration know what to do in an
emergency?
If you are lucky there is a full-time nurse at the school!
School nurses are there to help families feel at ease with
sending their children to school with chronic conditions. We encourage students
to be placed in the least restrictive environment while receiving the
healthcare prescribed. Procedures, medications, and treatments are provided by
a licensed professional allowing parents to return to work. As members of the Individual
Education Plan (IEP) or 504 team they can recommend accommodations to meet the individual
students needs. We provide continuing education to the school staff who encounter
the child giving them the confidence to have them in the classroom. Through
case management I can recognize trends and alert the care providers.
On average middle school students spend 4,320 at school. It is the school nurse that provides the piece of mind for families facing chronic conditions.
